Leonard, Joseph Ashton – 1861-1937

CLEAR CREEK – J. A. Leonard, 75, died at the hospital, at Roseville, Calif., Jan. 2, 1937 after a long illness.
Joseph Ashton Leonard, eldest son of Byron and Sarah (Ashton) Leonard was born Oct. 14, 1861 on the Ashton farm in this township.
He was united in marriage in 1881 to Miss Grace Cooper of Clyde. To this union two daughters, Carrie Oral and Mary Leora were born.
The wife died in November 1918 and the daughter, Mrs. Carrie Miller, on June 6, 1918.
In 1919, he rented his farm and he and the daughter built a cottage across the road from the old home and lived there.
A few years later he sold his farm and went to Roseville, Calif., to live near his brother, Walter Leonard.
When 65 years of age, Mr. Leonard submitted to the amputation of his right arm to save his life from the ravages of a malignant growth. He learned to write and work with the left hand.
Survivors are the daughter Leora Leonard of this vicinity, a granddaughter, Mrs. Grace Miller Leonard, of Hynes Creek, Canada, a great-granddaughter, Donna Jean Leonard of Canada, one brother, Charles Leonard of Colfax and a half-sister, Mrs. Sarah Jane Stock, of Roseville, Calif.
His parents and two brothers Harvey and Walter preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Congregational church at Ashton chapel and active in the Friends church at Roseville, Calif. He was township assessor, trustee and active in community affairs.
