Mr. Hotger was born in Sheeder Lippe, Germany, Jan. 22, 1850, and came to the United States when a young man of 19 years. Arriving without funds and unable to speak English, he was able to win a place of security and affluence in his adopted land in spite of these handicaps.
He came directly to Jasper county, Iowa, and located in Malaka township, north of Newton. After a short period of years, he bought an 80-acre farm in that township, and before retiring had added another 80 acres of land.
He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Moring March 11, 1874, and they lived on the farm in Malaka township until coming to Newton 35 years ago. Mrs. Hotger’s death occurred here Dec. 26, 1927.
Mr. Hotger was naturalized in 1874, and often remarked that “It was one of the happiest days of my life.” Judge Winslow was in office when he received his naturalization papers.

An active church worker, he was a faithful member of the Zoar Reformed church and had helped build the both present and former church building.
