Final Rites Held For W. A. Ewaldt
Military Services Conducted By American Legion Post
Military rites for W. A. (Pat) Ewaldt, 47, World War veteran, were conducted by Newton Post No. 111, American Legion, Friday afternoon at the grave in the soldier’s section of the Newton Union cemetery.
Preceding the graveside rites, services were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Murdoch funeral home, with Dr. E. A. Ramige of the First Congregational church in charge.
Music was furnished by Harold Finch, who sang, “There is a Beautiful Land on High.” He was accompanied at the organ by Lois Hundling.
Dr. P. L. Stow, commander, was in charge at the grave assisted by B. C. Berg, chaplain.
Pall Bearers
Pall bearers were Thomas Thornson, Walter T. Robinson, Harold Lufkin, E. P. Conine, A. M. Miller and Hugo Schulz. James Karreman and L. R. Mudd served as the color guard and Ralph Gardner and Glendale Butler were the color bearers.
The salute was fired by F. A. Dunn, John Hoffstatter, Dr. O. W. Bunker, C. C. Carey, Mac Edge, Dr. Cleo Nichols, N. E. Nelson and W. D. Smith.
Mr. Ewaldt died Wednesday morning at the Skiff Memorial hospital as the result of a fall down a stairway. Death was attributed to shock.
Shipwreck Survivor
Survivor of a shipwreck during the World War, Mr. Ewaldt had been the victim of several lesser mishaps during his five years residence in Newton. The most serious injury was a fractured vertebra in his neck, suffered when he fell from a step-ladder at the Jepson Drug store, where he was employed.
He was a member of Newton Post No. 111, American Legion, and was recently elected to the office of conductor in the Newton Forty and Eight.
Surviving relatives include two sisters, Mrs. Frances Oldenburg of Portland, Ore., and Miss Esther Ewaldt of Salem, Ore., and two brothers, Harry Ewaldt of Portland, Ore., and Earl Ewaldt of Elmira, N.Y.

Hold Military Rites Today For W. A. Ewaldt, 47
Military rites were to be conducted today for W. A. (Pat) Ewaldt, 47, World War Veteran, who died Wednesday morning as the result of injuries suffered in a fall down a stairway Monday afternoon.
Services were to be held at the Murdoch funeral home at 2:00 p.m., with Dr. E. A. Ramige of the First Congregational church delivering the funeral sermon. Interment was to be in the Newton Union cemetery.
