C. Childs Dies of Heart Attack
Presbyterian Church Custodian Dies on Duty; Funeral to Be Friday
C. C. Childs, 62-year-old custodian of the First Presbyterian church, dropped dead from a heart disease while he and his son, Leroy, were preparing for the funeral services of F. L. Maytag.
The men arrived at the church at 1 o’clock and Mr. Childs had worked about 20 minutes when he was stricken. He collapsed in the basement and his son immediately telephone for a doctor, but death came before the physician arrived.
Funeral Friday
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the church with the Rev. Harry J. Findlay pastor, in charge, assisted by Dr. L. B. Logan, Methodist Episcopal pastor. Burial will be in Newton Union cemetery.
Mr. Childs had been a resident of Newton for the last 21 years and was custodian of the church in which he died for 11 years. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Childs, his son, Leroy Childs, and two daughters, Veva Childs and Mrs. Harry (Lilla) Castens, all of Newton; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Hamilton of Valley Center, Kan., and Mrs. Mary Moxley, Norwalk, Ia.
Born in Indianola
Relatives today said that Mr. Childs had wished that no flowers be sent to his funeral, and asked friends to comply with the request.
Clarence Chester Childs was born Oct. 25, 1873, at Indianola, Ia. He grew to manhood in Indianola and for several years engaged in the livery business. He was married to Elizabeth Lathum Dec. 24, 1898, at St. Charles, Ia. Three children were born to this union, all of whom survive.
