Helen J. Pherigo, 86, of Newton died Monday, Nov. 8, at Heritage Manor in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gene Bryant officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in her name.

The daughter of Jack and Hazel (Croy) Higby, she was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Kellogg. She graduated from Kellogg High School in 1936. On Oct. 16, 1940, she married Onie C. Pherigo in Newton. She worked for the Vernon Company in the packing room and retired in 1980. She devoted her life to her family.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael B. Pherigo and Dr. Janice Gates of Newton and Scott A. Pherigo of Newton; a daughter, Janette R. See of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and a sister.
