At Rest – Last Monday morning Phoebe Manning, whose life has been hanging in the balance for the past two weeks, quietly and peacefully passed from earth’s sorrows and affliction to the joys and rewards of the “Unseen City.” Phoebe’s life history is familiar to most of our people, having been known here from childhood. She was born in Peoria, Illinois, May 1, 1850, and when four years of age here parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benj. Manning, moved to this city. At the age of 14, a great affliction came upon her which transformed her bright and happy childhood to a life of suffering. Some four years ago as a result of years of bodily affliction her mind became impaired, and her friends took her to the Hospital for the Insane, at Mt. Pleasant, hoping that the treatment there would restore her. But their hopes were vain, and although at first she seemed to improve, finally both body and mind gave way, and about two weeks ago she was brought to the home of her widowed mother in this city, where surrounded by her loved ones, the closing hours of her life were made as pleasant as possible, until the final summons came. At an early age she was converted and united with the M. E Church, in this city, but afterwards during a short residence in Colfax, she united with the Presbyterian church, of which she retained her membership until her death. The funeral services were held at the home of Mother Manning, on Tuesday afternoon at 6 o’clock, Rev. I. O. Kemble preached a short but impressive discourse, full of comfort for the sorrowing friends and appropriate music was furnished by Mrs. Rodgers, Miss Silaby, Lee Brown and Fred Hough, with Miss Treman as organist, after which, followed by a large number of friends, the remains were laid to rest in our beautiful cemetery.
