Mrs. Eugene Blackledge Dead

After long months of suffering this good woman passed peacefully away last Sunday morning at 7:30 o’clock, aged forty-seven years, eight months, and three days.

Mrs. Blackledge’s maiden name was Atlantic Gray. She was born in Monroe County, Ohio, December 10, 1851. Her parents died when she was quite young, and when but three years of age, she was taken to Jay County, Ind., where she grew to womanhood in the home of her only sister, Mrs. Mollie E. Haines, who became both a mother and a sister to the orphan girl, bestowing upon her all the loving care of a mother and the tender devotion of a sister. She came to Newton, when it became evident that the loved one’s days were numbered, and tenderly watched over and comforted her until the final summons came.

Deceased was united in marriage to Franklin Blackledge, Oct. 11, 1873, in Jay County, Ind. To this union were born four children, of whom three survive the mother. The family moved to Bloomington, Neb., where her husband died, after which she returned to Indiana, and on Feb. 2, 1884, was married to Eugene S. Blackledge. To them were born four children, only one of whom is left to comfort the bereaved father. For about twelve months she had been an invalid, making an almost hopeless but brave fight against the disease, which gradually wore her life away. Eight weeks ago, hoping that a change might be of benefit to her, and that she might be nearer her physician, she was brought from their farm home in Palo Alto, to the residence of her husband’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Blackledge, on West Washington Street, where until the end came, she received the kindest of treatment and tenderest care from the loving hands of kindred and friends. She had for several years been a member of the Congregational Church and died in full hop of a blessed immortality.

The funeral services were held at Mt. Zion M. E. Church in Elk Creek Township, at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. C. Harrah, after which the remains were laid to rest in Mt. Zion Cemetery. ~ The Newton Record Thursday, August 17, 1899
