Alan Eugene Foster, 50, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at home in Des Moines. A service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 at Iles-Dunns Chapel in Des Moines, where family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Cremation will follow the service and private inurnment will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

Alan was born Jan. 15, 1968, in Newton, to Dennis and Nancy (Hearl) Foster. He graduated from Newton High School in 1986, from Ellsworth Community College in 1988, and University of Northern Iowa in 1990. He worked for the Newton Daily News and then moved to Des Moines in 2001, and was managing editor for Iowa Outdoors for 18 years. Alan enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the Chicago Cubs, Iowa State, trips with his best friends from high school, spending time with family and following Chantelle to bowling events and Mikayla to soccer events. Alan will be remembered for his cooking (especially with garlic), his big heart and giving nature, his volunteerism, and will forever be known as “Big Al.” He was most proud of his work on the Iowa Outdoors magazine and most of all his two precious girls.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Mikayla and Chantelle of Grimes; sister, Deb (Jeff) Wollam of Marshalltown; niece, Aly (Brian) Price; and great nieces, Briella and Lucy Price of Boone; his fiance, Natalie Chandler of Newton; aunts and uncles, Cindy Reynolds of Newton, Michael (Diann) Foster of Waukee, Lynn (Robert) Van Maaren of Monroe, Donnie (Sue) Clubb of Clemons; and many cousins and close friends whom he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; and uncles.
