Rufus H. Goodell was born in Black Rock, New York, March 13, 1831, and died after a brief illness May 25, 1907, aged 76 years, 2 months and 12 days.

He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Porter, near Maxwell, where, with his wife, he had gone for a short visit.

When he was quite young his parents moved to Illinois, where he spent his youth and early manhood. He was there married to Emma Hayes, and to them were born two children, Cynthia and Armina.

They came to Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, in Sherman Township, where he resided until his death. His wife, Emma, and daughter, Armina, have preceded him to the better land.

He was married to Elizabeth Porter in 1872, and to them were born four children, one of whom died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Wm. Porter, of Maxwell, Mrs. Wm. Yarham, of Newton, and John and Luella, who reside at home, also by three grandchildren, Guy, Ray and Hubert Porter.

Mr. Goodell was a public-spirited citizen being especially interested in school affairs; a congenial and honest neighbor and a man whose character was above reproach.

Funeral services were conducted at Union Chapel near Ira on Tuesday afternoon of this week. The home was filled with many friends. Rev. C. A. Tenny of Newton spoke on the text, “I go the way of all the earth, be thou strong therefore.” Pastor Williams and his choir assisted in the service. ~ The Newton Daily News, Thursday, May 30, 1907, Page 2, Column 1
