Berdene Hicks, 89, died on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at Park Centre Skilled Nursing in Newton, Iowa. Funeral services for Berdene Hicks will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A visitation with the family will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time. A coffee time will be held in the Pence Tribute Center following the service.

Berdene Hicks the daughter of Elmer Klauenberg and Dorothy Rader was born January 18, 1929 in Laurel, Iowa. Berdene graduated from Baxter High School with the Class of 1946. On February 9, 1953, Berdene was united in marriage to Earl Hicks in Kirksville, Missouri.

She worked for Central Veterinary Service in Baxter for 21 years, retiring in September 1985. Berdene was a lifelong resident of Jasper County having lived in Colfax, Baxter and Newton. Her interests included her family, camping, shopping, gardening and sewing. She was a long time member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter, a member of the Newton Moose Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Those left to honor the memory of Berdene include her sons, Michael Hicks of UAE, Ed (Malia) Hicks of Kellogg, Iowa and Kendall (Suzanne) Hicks of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, five grandchildren, Michelle (Jake) Smith of Grovetown, Georgia, Nathan (Kim) Hicks of Englewood, Colorado, Doug (Johanna) Hicks of Gilbert, Iowa, Megan (Jamie) Hicks of Boone, Iowa and Kate Hicks of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, six great-grandchildren, Orion, Dashyl, Emmalyn, Ella Mae, Nic and Grace, two sisters, Kathryn Allspach and Barb Johnson, sister-in-law, Betty Schafer, special friend, Harlan Huffaker and many nieces and nephews.

Berdene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Sondra and Bea and brother, Byron. ~ The Pence Reese Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 19 Aug, 2018.
