Richard Harold Allspach, 89, of Baxter went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the Unity Point Hospital in Marshalltown, IA. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at the Evangelical Free Church, in Baxter, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at the Evangelical Free Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, Iowa.

Richard was born at the Marshalltown hospital on December 12, 1928 to David and Anna (Sanderman) Allspach. He attended the country schools in the Baxter area, then graduated from Baxter Consolidated Schools in 1947. He began farming with his father until April 13, 1951, when the US Army drafted him to serve in the Korean War. He completed his basic training in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo, then was transported by boat to Camp Drake, Tokyo, Japan to be trained as a cook and service supply specialist in the 396 Field Artillery Service Battery. Many of his fellow servicemen referred to him as "the Iowa Plow~Boy". He returned via the merchant marines to Seattle, WA, September 1952. After a trip by troop train to Ft Custer, MD, he was formally released October 1, 1952 and honorably discharged January 13, 1953.
Richard returned to the family farm that he loved and continued his life as a farmer. On March 18, 1967 he married the love of his life, Wilma Henson. They farmed together many years.

Richard was a member of the Baxter Evangelical Free Church, where he served in various ministries and was the church janitor for a number of years. He also belonged to the Iowa Antique Power, the Massey Collectors, and Jasper Co Sheep Producers Associations. He recently was inducted into the Massey Harris Hall of Fame. Richard enjoyed his family--especially his grandsons, camping, attending all old tractor events, restoring old tractors, and visiting with anyone. He was a great person for history. Through his amazing memory, he could remember so many different events of the last 89 years and even what the weather was like on that day.

Those left to cherish his loving memory are his daughter Lynette (Ruston) Sullivan of Carlisle, grandsons Lincoln and Morgan Sullivan of Carlisle and many friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family, which will be further designated at a later date.

Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care in Baxter has been entrusted with the care of Richard and his family. ~ The Fredregill Funeral Home, Baxter, Iowa 19 July 2018.
