Death of Mrs. Fred Thomas
The wife of Mr. Fred Thomas died on the operating table at the Anspach sanitorium, Sunday morning, while undergoing an operation for cancer. She had been troubled for several years and in March 1915, had an operation which was thought to be final, but the malady broke out again in the glands just below the arm.
Several months ago the arm began to swell and was very painful, but not until it was decided that an operation for the removal of the arm was necessary to prolong life did they make any attempt. The glands were first removed and all seemed well, but the subsequent amputation brought a shock from which she could not rally.
Dr. Stewart had charge of the case assisted by Dr. Anspach. Everything that care and skill could do was done. Death came as a thief in the night. The husband and children are appalled at the sudden going away, yet the circumstances seemed to warrant nothing else. There is general sorrow and universal sympathy for the bereaved.
The funeral occurred Wednesday morning at ten o’clock. The remains were taken to Oskaloosa at 12:30 for interment.
Deceased was 36 years old. Her maiden name was Della Smith, to whom Mr. Thomas was married 11 years ago. To them four children were born, Beulah, Vera, Hurbert and Evaline, who with their father and sister survive. The family have lived in Colfax some two years. Mr. Thomas is a member of the Thomas Hardware Company and he, with his children of tender age have the sympathy of all.
