This New Year’s time has brought anguish to many homes, many hearts are passing through deep sorrow, and now we have to chronicle another death, that of the passing away of a wife and mother, Mrs. Matt Merritt, whose death occurred this morning at 2 o’clock at the family home on West McDonald Street. Mrs. Merritt had been seriously afflicted since the first of December. The cause of her death was cerebral hemorrhage.

Last Tuesday she ate dinner with the family, but was taken seriously ill soon after. All day yesterday her life was despaired of by the attending physicians and loved ones of the family, although they still clung to the hope that she might be tided over the serious trouble.

It has been a little over two years ago since Mr. Merritt removed from Grinnell to this city, but in that time the family have made many warm acquaintances and Mrs. Merritt had won a large circle of true friends. Her face was so attractive and she always expressed a spirit of such sympathetic womanliness that everyone admired her and felt honored to have her friendship. Even with her many home cares, which she always made her first duty, with her gracious way she had attended to many social duties.

This happy home is truly darkened for the loss of the husband and three little children, one just a baby seven months old, is greater than words can express and almost more than hearts can bear.

Brief services will be held at the home tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. They will be in charge of Rev. W. Dieffenbach. The body will be taken to Marengo for burial. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Friday, January 11, 1907, Page 4, Column 4
