Obituary of Mary L. Remine
Mary L. Newhall was born in Burlington, Iowa, June 15th 1847. In 1861 she moved with her parents to Davenport, Iowa, October 18th 1866, at Davenport she was united in marriage to John W. Remine. To this union there were born four children, Lucy J., Lawrence W., Lottie May and John Edgar. Lottie May, now Mrs. B. J. Saurman, of Denver, Colorado, being the only child living to mourn the loss of her mother, and was with her for six weeks before her death, and lovingly assisted her father in caring for her suffering mother. John Edgar died in infancy and Lawrence W., died at the age of ten years. Lucy J., the wife of E. E. Franklin, of Ames, Iowa, died October 16th 1914, leaving two children Bennie F. and Mary Lucile, who with their father mourn the loss of a loving mother and grandma. In 1871, with her husband she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she continued a faithful member until her translation to the Church Triumphant in Heaven.
For twenty-eight years Mrs. Remine was a resident of Colfax and during that time she won the love and friendship of everyone who knew her by her gentle self-sacrificing Christian spirit. For forty years preceding her death she was an invalid, and though at times suffering greatly, she never complained. She was a beautiful Christian character, a loving, obedient daughter, and a true, faithful and loving wife and mother. For the last eighteen years of Mr. and Mrs. Remine’s residence in Colfax, Mr. Remine was associated in business with Mr. Bollhoefer as manager of the grocery department of his (Mr. Bollhoefer’s) store. Three years ago he resigned his position with Mr. Bollhoefer and he and Mrs. Remine went to make their home with their daughter, Lulu and husband, Mr. Franklin. Early in April 1915 she was stricken with partial paralysis which completely prostrated her, badly affecting her right side and her mind, this compelled her to leave Mr. Franklin and the children to seek treatment. After spending six months with relatives in Davenport, Bettendorf and Marshalltown and having partially recovered, she and her husband returned to be with Mr. Franklin and the grandchildren at Ames, Iowa. After being with them some nine months some very severe new afflictions came upon her which were so painful and prostrating that it was plainly seen that she must have special treatment and on August 6th her husband removed her to the Soldiers Home Hospital. Here she was lovingly and tenderly cared for her patient Christian spirit winning the love of everyone. The afflictions for which she came here were greatly relieved but finally the mental trouble became much worse and in spite of the skill of the physicians, the care and attention of matron and nurses and watchful love of husband and daughter she passed from earth to Heaven at 9:30 a.m. October 7th without a struggle and her tired form was laid to rest near her daughter, Lulu, and grandson, Mark, in the cemetery at Colfax, Iowa, October 11th. The funeral services were held at the Colfax Methodist Episcopal church conducted by Rev. Edward Pruitt, her former pastor, assisted by Rev. G. F. Cannom, the present pastor.
In addition to the husband and daughter the following relatives of the deceased were present at the funeral at Colfax – her brother, George D. Newhall, of Radcliffe; her nephew, F. J. Igou, of Bettendorf; her son-in-law, E. E. Franklin and his two children of Ames. There were also present the following relatives of Mr. Remine, a niece, Mrs. George C. Wells, Davenport; a brother, J. N. Hurto, wife and two daughters, Anna and Lena, of Marshalltown.
Before removing the remains from the Soldiers Home, a brief service was held at the Hospital conducted by the Chaplain of the Home.
