Former Colfax Lady Dies
Mrs. Charles Chew Dies Early Sunday Morning of Typhoid Fever
Mrs. Charley Chew died at her home in Newton, Sunday morning of typhoid fever. The family were formerly residents of this place. She leaves a husband and five small children. One of the children had the typhoid fever and then the mother contracted it from her. The remains were shipped to Colfax for interment, and the funeral was held in the Methodist church at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Cannom preached the funeral sermon.
Monday’s Daily Journal had the following particulars of her death:
Yesterday morning early, about 5 o’clock, occurred the death of Mrs. Charles Chew.
Mrs. Chew was Miss Catherine Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Jones, of Colfax. She had typhoid fever and has been sick since about the first of October. The cause of her death was perforation of the bowels.
When Mrs. Chew was taken sick, she was all worn out, having had the care of a daughter, who was one of the first typhoid patients in Newton this last season.
Mrs. Chew was the mother of five children, the oldest one the daughter, Frances, is twelve years of age. The youngest is the two-year-old daughter, Virginia. Then there is Charles, Lucretia and Robert.
The Chews came to Newton two or three years ago.
Mr. Chew is a clerk in the Hough & Son grocery.
The sympathy of everyone who has been acquainted with the family, has been with the husband and children in this home all during the mother’s illness; and now the sympathy of all goes out to the members of this grief stricken home which has suffered the greatest loss that could come to it, and to the parents and brothers whose hearts are filled with deepest sorrow.
Mrs. Chew was a lovely wife and mother. She passed her thirtieth birthday anniversary last June. Two weeks ago they thought she was doing very well and hoped she would be sitting up some by this time but a change for the worse took her quickly. After the mother came the sick daughter recognized her but was conscious only a brief time.
