This morning about ten o’clock on a farm east of town occurred an accident, which caused the death of George Sampson, whose home is on a farm about one and one-half miles from Pleasant View Church near Kellogg.

Mr. Sampson and Victor Reynolds were at work boring a well on the George Eichner farm two miles northeast of the county home, with a two and a half foot auger, when it became necessary to go to the bottom of the well to recover a rod.

This George Sampson attempted to do. When about ten feet from the top be was overcome by gas and called for the men to haul him up. Before they could do this he fell forty-five feet to the bottom. When taken out a half hour later he was dead.

Yesterday they had used dynamite in the well and it is thought that the gas from this explosion still remained in the well, and that it was this gas with which he was overcome.

Mr. Sampson was a man about thirty-three years old and son of D. W. Sampson, northwest of town. Besides his parents he leaves a wife and several brothers and sisters. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Thursday, September 6, 1906, Page 4, Column 3
