In the passing away of Henry Phillips, who this morning at 5:30 o’clock succumbed to a serious attack of yellow jaundice, death has removed one who for nearly fifty years has been a resident of Jasper County. The deceased has always been of healthy strong constitution. The last year he has had some stomach trouble, but it was not considered of a serious nature. About two weeks ago while cleaning the cistern at his home he was injured but only slightly, from that time until his death this morning, he has gradually grown weaker. The early part of his illness he suffered a great deal but for a couple of days toward the last he seemed easier, and his friends hoped it was for the better.

Mr. Phillips was born Jan. 23, 1832, at Steubenville, Ohio. While still residing in his native state he was married to Miss Sarah Walters. In September 1860 he removed with his family to Iowa and settled on a farm in Sherman Township, where they continued to make their home until six years ago last spring when they moved to the home on Greencastle Avenue where his death occurred.

Socially he was a Mason and religiously a member of the Methodist Protestant Church.

Deceased leaves a wife and three children, William F. Phillips and Mrs. Oscar Stockman of this city and Charles H. of Mitchellville, all of whom have been at his bedside during his illness, caring for him night and day. They were assisted by his only brother, Harry Phillips and his sisters, Mrs. John Allfree and Mrs. Elizabeth Scarborough of this place and Mrs. J. J. Morris of Hartford, Iowa.

The funeral will be held from the Methodist Church Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. O. S. Baker officiating. The interment will be in the cemetery west of town in Sherman Township, where two of his children are buried. ~ The Newton Daily News, Wednesday, September 26, 1906,
