William Gardner died last Saturday night at Everett, Wash., after several years of poor health. He formerly for many years resided near Greencastle, northwest of this city, and later resided here.
It is about three years since he and his wife left Newton for the west. During this time they have been at several different points along the coast where their children reside. ~ The Newton Daily News, Wednesday, October 3, 1906, Page 4, Column 1

Note: The microfilm had the left side of the obit cut off.The funeral of William Gardner will be held from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Ed. Duncan at Greencastle, tomorrow at 2 p.m. Rev. R. F. Chambers will officiate. The interment will be in the Greencastle Cemetery.
The body of William Gardner arrived in this city Saturday and was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Duncan, near Greencastle, where the funeral services were held Sunday. It was a **** funeral, many of the old friends and acquaintances of the **** being present.
Services were conducted by Rev. R. F. Chambers of Newton and the music was furnished by a quartette from ****. The interment was in the cemetery at Greencastle.
Mr. Gardner was born at Lanark, Scotland, Oct. 27, 1828. He came to the United States when he was ***eteen (nineteen?) years old.
***five years ago with his family he came to Jasper County. For about *** years he resided in this city, he *** for the western coast some *** years ago, on account of poor health. For the past year he has not been well, and for six or eight *** his condition has been very ****. During this last severe illness he resided at the home of his son at ****, Washington, where his death occurred.
He is survived by his wife, whom he married fifty-eight years ago and nine children, five sons and four daughters.

Among those from Newton who attended the obsequies yesterday were Mrs. R. F. Chambers, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cook and daughter, Grace, Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. McLain, Mrs. Mary Newhouse and Mrs. William Watt. ~ The Newton Daily News, Tuesday, October 9, 1906, Page 1, Column 1
