Wednesday morning, Mr. C. R. Graham and his hand, were putting up hay for Mrs. Malcomson near town, Mr. Graham was pitching hay to his hand whose name was John Thompson. Mr. Thompson was taken with a spell of coughing accompanied by hemorrhage and came down to the ground floor, and in less than twenty minutes was a corpse. Dr. W. T. Geary was sent for but the man was dead before he arrived. The physician says he had a scar on his collar bone and though it was nearly healed on the outside there was doubtless an abscess on the inside which having broken was the immediate cause of his death.
The deceased had told Mr. Graham’s folks that his father was a hotel keeper in Buffalo, N.Y. and that he had about one year ago started for a trip to California and return and on the return trip had run short of cash and was working his way back. He had only been in Mr. G’s employ a short time; he was steady and industrious man of about 25 or 26 years of age. He would weigh about 140 pounds, about 5 feet, 9 inches high, of light complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair and mustache. He was buried in the cemetery in Prairie City on Tuesday morning.
