GROOM

We are very much pained to learn of the insanity of a daughter of our esteemed friend, John E. Groom. He lost his son, who died away from home a few months since, and now this worse than second death falls heavily upon him. He has the sympathy of kind friends, but nothing except time can calm the mind under such affliction, for the silent hours will come when no friend is nigh to console and when grief overpowers the soul. At such times no one except the Greater Friend can be relied upon for strength. The cause of her insanity is unknown. - Being sudden and violent it is to be hoped it will not last. She will likely be taken to the insane asylum at Mt. Pleasant.

Jasper county’s insane, for the quarter year ending December 31st, 1871, cost, as shown by the bill forwarded from the Asylum at Mt. Pleasant to the County Auditor, just $627.95. While the county pays the whole bill to the Asylum, a portion of it is refunded by the relatives of some of the patients. During the quarter three of the unfortunates have died, Hannah Riley, Anna Bennett and Lydia Groom. Robert Spragg, from near Vandalia broke his arm in one of his fits of frenzy. - Republican
