Allen Dean Sydnes, 81, died March 19, 2018, at home from COPD and heart disease. He lived in Windsor Heights, IA, for 26 years.

A memorial service was held at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, IA.

Allen was born June 6, 1937, to Ernest Edwin and Leona Dorothy (Gates) Sydnes in Des Moines, IA. He was baptized June 30, 1937, at Slater Lutheran Church and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church. He graduated from Roland, IA, in 1955. Allen was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1962 and graduated from Iowa State University in 1964. After working at Wolf & Company, CPA, and other firms, Allen served in financial positions at various hospitals and at Iowa Hospital Association. On December 23, 1966, Allen was married to Sandie Severson in Omaha, Nebraska.

Allen was an active volunteer at church and was a Polk County Master Gardener. He was passionate about genealogy and had traced his family lineage back many generations, culminating in a visit to the ancestral home in Norway. He ran for Windsor Heights mayor in 2009.

Allen is survived by his wife of 51 years; a daughter Helen Sydnes (Dennis) Coffman; a son Daniel Reinert Sydnes; a brother Robert John (Sheila) Sydnes; and brother-in-law Raymond Paul (Beth) Severson; and many extended family and friends.

Allen was preceded in death by both parents and by a brother George Harold Sydnes.
