Charles J. Hyke, 88, of Waterloo, died Friday, June 16, 2017, at Ravenwood Specialty Care in Waterloo.
Charles was born on Aug. 1, 1928, in Elma, son of William L. and Mary Ann Malek Hyke. He married Beverly J. Aspel Feb. 23, 1952, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waterloo. She died Oct. 28, 2011.
Charles attended Crestwood High School in Cresco where he won a state wrestling championship in 1948 at 135 lbs. In 1948 he joined the United States Navy where he went on to place third in the Navy's world wrestling tournament. After being discharged from the Navy, Charles worked at Rath’s Packing where he stayed for 34 years, retiring in 1985.
Survivors include three daughters, Judith L. (Steve) McBride of Colfax, Deborah (Joe) Purdy of Cedar Falls and Sharon (Tommy) Viet of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jessica (Bailey) and Joshua McBride, Megan and Tiffany Olmstead; and three great-grandchildren, Cameron McBride, Destiny McBride-Dannels and Cayden Kressley; and many nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly A. Hyke; a grandson, Justin McBride; four sisters, Agnes Driscoll, Mary Jan Hudson, Genevieve Buker and Clara Mae McKeown; four brothers, Benjamin, Leonard, William and Clement Hyke; and an infant sister, Eleanor Hyke.A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 22 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Public Visitation will be one hour before service Thursday at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family. Condolences may be left at hagartywaychoffgrarup.com
