Eliza Paul was born in County Antrim, Ireland, Feb. 24, 1827 and departed this life Jan. 9, 1907.
She was married to Robert Paul of Lesbareen County Antrim, Ireland, Nov. 13, 1844. They emigrated to Scott Co., Iowa, in 1866. In 1872 they came to Jasper County and she has resided in Hickory Grove township ever since.
She was the mother of four children; two preceded her to the Great Beyond. One son, J. R. Paul, and one daughter, Mrs. Joe Lowry of Gilman, survive her; also three brothers, James Paul of County Antrim, Ireland, Wm. Paul of Gilman and David Paul of Newton, and one sister, Mrs. James Paul of Nebr., to mourn the loss of a kind mother and a loving sister.
She united with the Clough Water Presbyterian church at an early age. For the past 35 years she has been a member of the Barrett Presbyterian church.
Mrs. Paul was an earnest Christian and was beloved by all who knew her. In her last illness the Bible was her constant companion and her last words expressed a longing to be with Jesus.
The funeral services were held at the U. B. church on Friday, Jan. 11, and were conducted by Rev. W. W. Woodburn of Grinnell, assisted by Rev. Mr. Violet of the U. B. church.
A very large number of relatives and friends were present.
