Rites Held For Former Resident
Services for Charles M. Reed, 74, who died suddenly November 21 at his home were held Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Fife Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Inglis officiating. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery, Hammond, Ind.
Members of the legal profession and hundreds of friends mourned the death of Mr. Reed, one of the most popular and respected attorneys in Lake county, East Chicago, Ind.
Short and peppery, he was active until his last day, after a 52-year career as a lawyer. Younger attorneys recalled that he was ever helpful to them with facts on the early days of East Chicago.
Born in Monroe, Iowa, he went to Indiana as a young man and worked his way through Valparaiso Law School as a telephone lineman. He graduated in 1911 and went into practice with the law firm of Hembroff and Glazebrook. This later became the firm of Riley, Reed, Murphy and McAtee. Clients include the largest corporations in the Calumet region.
Mr. Reed was an early associate of Col. Walter J. Riley, chairman of the board of the First national Bank of East Chicago, in the old East Chicago Co. which laid out the city of East Chicago. He was known as an expert in corporation, banking and real estate law, and handled many other legal matters.
He was the oldest director, in point of service, on the board of the First National Bank of East Chicago. He also was a director of the lake County Title Co., Inc., and of the lake County Trust Company. He was a member of the board of trustees of Valparaiso University and was a member of the university’s “Hall of Fame.”
Survivors are his wife, Agnes; two sons, Robert of Hammond and Dr. Ronald Reed of East Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Lyly Vinderzyle of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Cora Jennings of East Chicago, and a grandson, Charles.
