Obituary

Died: George W. Baker at his home in this city, Wednesday morning, October 17, 1894, of paralysis.

George Washington Baker was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, September 15, 1824, and was married to Miss Hannah Baker of the same county, July 4, 1847. To that union four children were born, two sons and two daughters, three of whom are now living, Rev. J. P. and Miss Ella Baker of this city and G. D. Baker of Muscatine; the other daughter died at Blue Grass, Iowa, in 1870.

In the fall of 1848 Mr. and Mrs. Baker moved from Ohio to Iowa and settled in Muscatine County. A few years later they moved to Blue Grass, Iowa, where they resided until 1879, when, with their family, they moved to this city, which place has been their home ever since. Mrs. Baker died in this place three years ago this month and was buried at Blue Grass, Iowa. Mr. Baker had not been in the best of health for some time, but was first taken sick Friday morning, September 21, while eating breakfast and was soon after confined to his bed where he remained more or less until his death. Monday, September 23, he was stricken with paralysis and became blind and helpless, in which condition he remained until the end, his suffering toward the last being terrible.

In his early life the deceased and his wife joined the Lutheran Church. When they moved to Blue Grass they joined the Presbyterian Church, but since coming to Newton he has not been a member of any Church, but has always been a liberal contributor toward all religious denominations.

The funeral services were held at the house yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, being conducted by Rev. Rice, assisted by Revs. Brooks, Jacoby and Harrah. The remains were taken to Blue Grass this morning at which place funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock, after which they will be laid in their last resting place beside those of his wife and daughter. Rev. J. P. and Miss Ella Baker, Benjamin Baker of McCook, Nebraska, and C. W. Campbell accompanied the remains to Blue Grass. ~ The Newton Record, Newton, IA, Friday, October 19, 1894
