Alva Baker, 82, Dies at Home; Services Friday
Alva Baker, 82, of 213 East 4th St. South, a lifelong resident of Newton, died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Toland funeral home.
The Rev. Arthur V. Long, minister of the First Methodist church; will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery.
Mr. Baker is survived by his wife; a daughter, Margaret Baker of Newton, Jasper county recorder; and a sister, Mrs. Dora Jennison of Beverly Hills, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Baker was a charter member of the Palo Alto Grange.
The son of Charles and Ellen Peacock Baker, he was born February 28, 1879 in Newton.
He was married October 26, 1904 at the country home of his mother, Mrs. Ellen Baker, in Sherman township to Mabel E. Shull. They observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1954.
Mr. Baker farmed until 1916 when he moved to Newton. He was an employee of the Vernon Co. for 17 years, retiring in December 1958.
Mr. Baker served as a lieutenant in Company L. Fifty-Fourth Iowa Regiment of the Iowa Militia around 1900. ~ The Newton Daily News April 26, 1961.
