LAST RITES SAID FOR RUSSELL BAILEY

Russell Lee Bailey, 75, of Rte. 2, Grinnell, died at Grinnell General Hospital West Wesnesday aftrnoon. He had been in poor health for the last six weeks.

Mr. Bailey was born Aug. 15, 1892, at Dillsboro, Ind., the son of Perry and Lydia Summerfruit Bailey. He attended the local schools of Dillsboro, and then moved to Iowa.

On Aug. 31, 1919, at Sheffield, Iowa, he married Alma Heltzel and to this union were born five children: Perry Bailey of Grinnell, Mrs. Carol (Edith May) McCain of Malcom; Charles Russell Bailey, who died at age 19; Mrs. Lloyd (Virginia) Durr of Rte. 2, Grinnell; and Richard Bailey of Rte. 2, Grinnell.

In addition to his widow Alma, two sons and two daughters. Mr. Bailey is survived by one sister Mrs. Gertrude Liggett of Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Charles on Aug. 14, 1952; his sister, Mrs. Cora Houston, on June 26, 1965; and his brother Warren Bailey, on Jan. 28, 1968.

Mr. Bailey had enlisted in the U. S. Army in December 1917 and later served overseas in France with Co. F, 7th Engineers, 5th Division. Following his discharge in August 1919, he returned to Grinnell, where he farmed for nearly 49 years on the family farm northwest of Grinnell. He had supported the Newburg United Church of Christ and was a charter member of the Lewis C. Murdock Post #640, American Legion, at Newburg. Mr. Bailey was also a membher of the Stanley-Marchellino Post #3932, Veterans of Foreigh Wars, Grinnell, and was a charter member of the Chester Royal Grange.

Funeral services fro Mr. Russell Lee Bailey were held at 2 p.m.Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Willard Reynolds, interim pastor of the Newburg United Church of Christ, officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Donald J. Renaud and casket bearers were David Krumm, John Krumm, Harry Rutherford, Laverne Raffety, Harley McIlrath, and Gilmore Robbins Jr. Flower bearers were Mrs. Gilmore Robbins Sr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wallis.

Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery with American Legion graveside rites conducted by Jack Day, chaplain, Robert Mason, Commander, and members of the Lewis C. Murdock Post #640 of Newburg.
