Obituary

Joan Lane of Newton, died suddenly and unexpectedly of pneumonia and multiple organ failure on Friday, September 8, 2017, at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 11th from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A time of remembrance and celebration of life for Joan will be 1:00p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton, with burial at Newton Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, and as an expression of sympathy, memorials may be designated to First United Methodist Church, Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation, the Newton Arboretum or Kellogg or Jasper County Historical Societies, in her name.

Phyllis Joan Lane 75, was born July 2, 1942, at Skiff Hospital in Newton, the daughter of W. Warren and Helen Cornelia (Loff) Bates of Kellogg. She grew up on the family farm North of Kellogg. When the Kellogg High School closed, she came to Newton for her junior and senior years, graduating with the Class of 1960. As an office practice student, she worked at Newton Manufacturing Company and continued working there after high school.

In 1965, Joan was married to Bob Dewar. When their daughter, Susan was born, Joan stayed home to raise her. When Susan was 6 months old, Bob's three daughters from his previous marriage came to live with them. They were Leeanne, 6, Nancy, 4, and Cathy, 3. In 1971, Steven was born. This marriage later ended. On October 17, 1981, Joan was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Lane. This added two more children, Bruce and Beth, to the family.

Joan devoted her life to her family, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, a Camp Fire Girl's leader, was President of the Newton Girls Softball League, member of Jasper County Concert Association, Skiff Hospital Auxiliary, Jasper County Historical Society, Kellogg Historical Society and Women of the Moose. She was very active and volunteered at election polls, Skiff Hospital gift shop, in PTA, worked in the concession stand at H.A. Lynn Stadium, bowling leagues for over 50 years and served as chairwoman and host for funeral lunch committee at the church, for over 30 years.

Joan is survived by her husband Bob Lane; her children: Susan Dewar, Steve (Jennifer) Dewar, Leeanne (Kelly) Mohler, Nancy (Bob) Ainsworth, and Cathy (Terry) Moss; step-daughter Beth (Corey) Walker; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; her sister Dorothy J. (Larry) Wood of Newton; her cousins: Janice (the late David) Miller, Mike (Sue) Beukema, Janie (Rick) Haunsperger and Paul (Liz) Beukema; and many good neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents; her parents, her grandson Ryan Andrew Mohler; and her step-son Bruce Alan Lane. ~ The Pence Reese Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 8 Sept 2017.
