Mrs. Nancy Schip-Newton was born in Johnson County, Indiana, November 30, 1831, and passed out of this life at the home of her foster daughter, Mrs. Byron Winpigler, Monday, March 2, 1914, after a protracted illness.
She was married to Wm. L. Newton, August 5, 1860, in Shelby Co., Indiana and was the mother of five children all of whom preceded her to the grave. Her husband died April 10, 1881 and of late years she had lived with her foster daughter. She came to Jasper County, Iowa, in the spring of 1847 and on September 22, 1848 her father filed on the land that now constitutes the Frank Gagle and John Kartchner farms, just north of Colfax. He was a member of the Jasper County Grand jury in June 1848 and in 1850, was the 4th wealthiest man in the county, according to the assessor’s rolls. Mrs. Newton is perhaps the last of the first generation that settled in this locality, prior to the discovery of gold in California. Her brother, Albert Schip, laid out Greencastle in 1855, which in a few years after became one of the important trading points in Jasper Co. Mrs. Newton moved to Colfax in 1867 and this was her home until her passing away. She was of a quiet and reserved disposition, plain and frugal, kind and hospitable, a true type of the pioneer. Funeral was held from the Christian Church, Wednesday afternoon, March 4, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Munyon and interment was at Highland Park Cemetery by the side of her husband.
Mrs. Lulu Winpegler and Mrs. Merle Brainard, adopted daughter of deceased take this occasion and method to thank their friends and neighbors for kindness and sympathies extended them in their hour of bereavement by the loss by death of their dear good foster mother.
