Life Story of Carl J. Crane
Services were held Monday for Carl J. Crane, 81, of Monroe.
He died Thursday, June 9th at Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines.
The Rev. Hilton Griswold, assisted by the Rev. Eugene Kelsey officiated at the services at the Monroe Methodist Church. Burial was in the Silent City Cemetery of Monroe.
Carl James Crane, oldest of six children born to William A. and Martha Bigley Crane, was born January 31, 1896, and departed this life June 9, 1977, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 9 days.
His boyhood was spent in the Tool’s Chapel neighborhood, where he received his schooling and became a member of the Tool’s Chapel Methodist church upon confession of faith. During World War I he served in France with Headquarters Company, 133rd Infantry, 34th Division of the United States Army. On September 14, 1921, he was married to Ada A. VanZante in the home in which he lived most of his adult years. He was owner and operator of the Crane Garage, active in church and community affairs, member of the Monroe Commercial Club, a member of the board of education, and one of the original and last surviving members of Slayden Post #363 of the Monroe American Legion. At the time of his death he was a member of the Newton First Assembly of God Church and the Veterans of World War I Barracks, #1503 of Newton.
He is survived by his widow, a sister, Mary Dykstra of Monroe, and three children and their families. They include Mr. and Mrs. Wallace (Mary) Bump of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mr. and Mrs. Joel Bump, Grand Terrace, California; Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Crane of Del Mar, California, Mr. and Mrs. James Crane, Mike and Greg of Brownsburg, Indiana, Cathy Crane of San Clemente, Dave Crane of Sunnyvale and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sillings, of LaMirada, California; and Dr. and Mrs. Roger Crane, Ronald, Ronald, Paul and Steven of Kendall Park, New Jersey. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Hallie and Lawrence, and two sisters, Flossie and Iona.
