Funeral Services For Mrs. Anna Ward Monday
Mrs. Anna Ward, 89, a longtime resident of this city, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Barton in Des Moines Saturday. Mrs. Ward had been bedfast for the past 7 weeks and had failed quite rapidly just prior to her death.
The daughter of David and Mary Willey, she was born August 23, 2869, in Yorkshire, England, and came to Des Moines with her parents at the age of 13, having received part of her education in England and the rest in schools in Des Moines. On January 17, 1905, she was united in marriage to John C. Ward, who preceded her in death in 1952.
Mrs. Ward leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Barton of Des Moines, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, besides two sisters, Mrs. Thomas McLeod of Colfax and Mrs. Florence Lacy of Des Moines. A brother, Thomas Willey of Gillespie, Ill., and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Ward was a member of the Methodist Church and active in community affairs in her earlier years. Always playing the role of a good neighbor, she was eager to lend a helping hand to friends in time of need, and while many of her close associates have preceded her in death, there are still a large number of those who will miss this beloved lady in the days to come.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon from the Bumgardner Funeral Home at 2:00 o’clock with Rev. E. H. Jackson, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating.
Bearers were Blaine Hopkins, Frank Gregg, Frank Davidson, Richard Gregg, Judge C. Edwin Moore and Chas. Herbold.
Burial was in the Colfax cemetery.
