Services Held for Nelly Maurine Bond
Nelly Maurine Bond was born December 21, 1904, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Her parents were Frederick O. Price and Margaret Buck Price. Maurine’s mother died when Maurine was only two years old. So Maurine was raised by her grandmother Marcia Buck and her Aunt Nelly Buck.
Maurine married William Wilford Bond in West Des Moines on October 10, 1924. She lived in the Colfax area the rest of her life. Maurine died of cancer on February 2, 1976, in Prairie City.
Maurine had two careers at different times in her life even though they overlapped. She was not only a farmer’s wife, homemaker and mother, but in 1952 she resumed a teaching career at Blanford School – a one-room county school. She also attended Drake University from which she graduated in August 1963, with honors. She also taught at Southeast Polk and in the Newton Public School system until she retired in June 1970.
Maurine and Wilford spent their retirement years in Colfax. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October 1974.
Maurine had been active in many clubs and organizations. She was a member of Eastern Star in which she was a past matron, Senior Singers, the Retired Teachers Association, the jasper County Historical Society, and the Blanford Friendly Circle club. She was a 55-year member of the Colfax United Methodist church where she had also been active in the United Methodist Women’s organization and circles.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother.
She is survived by her husband, William Wilford Bond three sons and three daughters-in-law: Ralph Edward and E. Kathleen Bond of Columbia, Mo.; Carl Wilford and Marti Hespen Bond of Las Vegas, Nev.; Howard Frederick and Judy Kathryn Bond, Colfax, Ia. Also surviving are four grandsons: Wm. George Bond, Roy Eugene Bond, David Reece Bond, and Eric Wilford Bond; one great-grandson: William Nelson Bond.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the United Methodist church in Colfax at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dick Clark, pastor of the church, officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Frank B. Evans, organist, Mrs. Mary Hunter, Miss Mable Kaldenberg and the Colfax Senior Singers.
She was buried in the Hillside Cemetery, State Center, Iowa, along with her parents, and the grandmother and aunt who raised her.
Bearers were William, Roy and David bond and David, Reece and Jay Williams.
Flower committee – Mrs. Mieko Williams, Mrs. Shirley Williams, Mrs. Josephine Bell and Miss Mable Kaldenberg.
