`Death of F. M. Stem
Last Friday morning the startling intelligence circulated about town that F. M. Stem was dead. He was seated in D. B. Ault’s restaurant when the attack of heart disease came upon him. Dr. B. T. Gadd was hastily called, but death claimed the stricken man within a few minutes after his arrival. He had been carried from the front part of the building and laid upon a cot in the rear room, where he expired. As soon as possible the body was carried across the street to A. Carsons undertaking establishment and embalmed and prepared for burial. F. M. Stem was born in Ohio 67 years ago. For many years he had been a resident of Iowa, owning a farm north of this place, and two 160 acre farms near Greenfield, and was worth about $30,000. He has for years been in the habit of spending a part of the fall and spring months here, the summer months at Greenfield, and the winter months at some resort. He had been here since the larger part of October. The writer had known him for 20 years, and always found a genial, companionable man; and it is hard to realize that he has gone never to return, but such is the decree. Peace to his ashes.
Mrs. Stella M. Bacon of Chicago, the daughter of deceased, arrived Monday afternoon and took charge of the remains of her father, being a guest of Mayor Fields while here.
The funeral occurred at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from the M. E. church, Rev. J. P. Morley conducted the brief but impressive service, taking as a text the words “Be ye also ready, for ye know not the hour when the Son of man cometh,” from which he preached a sermon replete with practical ideas. Music was furnished by the choir, consisting of W. O. Monnett, Mrs. Mollie Jones, Minnie Allen, Bertha Allen and C. W. Marmon. The pallbearers were S. J. Lee, A. J. McCleary, S. J. Oldfield, Frank McCauley, C. L. Henney and A. Edmonson. At the conclusion of the service the body was taken to Monroe and laid away by the side of his mother.
