Zelpha Faye McWhirter, 100, of Newton, died of heart failure, Sunday, April 23, at Heritage Care Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. EvaLyn Carlson, pastor of the Newton First Christian Church and the Rev. Gene Wittie of Waterville, Minn., officiating. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.
Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where family will be present. Memorials in Mrs. McWhirter's name to the First Christian Church will be accepted.
The daughter of William F. and Millie E. Ulrich Russell, she was born June 28, 1899, in Colfax. She attended Colfax High School. She married Robert D. McWhirter Nov. 14, 1916, in Newton.
A longtime resident of Colfax and Newton, Mrs. McWhirter moved to Waterville, Minn. in 1957 before returning to Newton in 1994. She owned and operated a resort in Minnesota and was a member of the First Baptist Church and Senior Citizens, both in Waterville, Minn.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Helen Rexroat of Pella, Clarice and Dave Trotter of Newton and Alice and Ron Trotter of Atkin, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Lillian McWhirter of Baxter; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great-grandchildren; a foster sister, Myrtle Welch of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, a son, a granddaughter, three brothers, a sister and two grandsons. ~ The Newton Daily News, April 24, 2000
