Pioneer Resident is Dead
Mrs. L. N. Mateer Dies Early This Morning At Age of 80 Years
Mrs. L. N. (Lowrie Norman) Mateer, 80, longtime resident of Jasper county died at her home this morning after an illness of several weeks.
Mrs. Mateer had been in the hospital recently. Her death was attributed to heart trouble.
Near Monroe
Born in Mansfield, Ohio in 1870, the daughter of George and Martha Palmer, she came to Jasper county when she was three years old. The family lived near Monroe, and Mrs. Mateer attended Monroe schools and also Hazel Dell Academy in Newton. She taught in Monroe elementary schools for three years.
Mr. and Mrs. Mateer were married Sept. 26, 1894, and they moved to their present home in Newton in 1914.
Surviving are her husband, a retired farmer and five children, Pearl and Harold of Newton; Carroll of Des Moines; Mrs. R. J. Mathes, Boulder, Colo.; and Mrs. Don Rorobaugh, Santa Barbara, Calif.
Active in Church
Mrs. Mateer was a member of the Methodist church from her very early youth. She joined the Belevue church near Monroe while a girl and was also active in the Tool’s Chapel church before coming to Newton. She had been a member of the First Methodist church in Newton since 1914, and all through her life made church work one of her primary interests. She was also a member of the Busy Bee Society.
Mr. and Mrs. Mateer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1944 at their home here with over 100 guests attending.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Services will be in charge of Toland Funeral Home.
