Funeral Wednesday For E. E. Duer, Early Grocer
Funeral services for Elmer E. Duer, 88, one of Newton’s well known businessman for nearly half a century who died Saturday, will be held at 2:00 Wednesday at Johnson-Murcoch Funeral Home. Mr. Duer died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Skiff Memorial Hospital. He had been in poor health since suffering a stroke about two years ago.
Born July 9, 1865 at Washington, Iowa, the son of George and Sarah Duer, he moved to Parkersburg at the age of 3, and later to Eagle Grove where as a young man he went into business with his brother.
He was married June 20, 1894 at Eagle Grove to Harriet Benedict. In 1901 Mr. Duer came to Newton where he engaged in the grocery and general merchandise business. He operated a store in partnership on the north side of the square where the Firestone store is now located. After being in the grocery business for more than 25 years, Mr. Duer went into the real estate and insurance business here. His home was at 718 South Third Avenue West.
Survivors include his wife, one daughter Helen, at home; one son, Bayard, of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; five sisters, Mrs. Flo Piper of Minneapolis, Mrs. Nellie Bawn of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Susan Nelson of Houston, Tex., Miss Mae Duer of Houston, Mrs. Pearl Wymer of Hartley, Iowa, and one brother, Charles Duer of Eagle Grove.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one brohther and one sister.
Mr. Duer was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Pythias and the Elks lodge. Officiating at the service Wednesday will be the Rev. Ralph E. Eckard, pastor of First Lutheran church, and burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.
