Obituary

Harry Holmes of Newton passed from this life on Tuesday evening, March 21, 2017, at Skiff Medical Center of Newton.

Harry G. Holmes, Jr., 73, was born May 15, 1943, near Davenport, Iowa, the son of Harry G. Holmes, Sr. and Dorothy (Moore) Holmes. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Class of 1961, and attended Drake University and Grandview College, both in Des Moines. A longtime resident of the Newton area, he was employed by Iowa Des Moines National Bank and Shelby Business Forms, retiring in 2007, as the National Sales Manager for the Vernon Company in Newton.

On March 21, 2015, Harry married Teresa Knapp-Holton. He was a loving husband and father, and will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Harry enjoyed boating, at a lake in Missouri, playing golf with friends, traveling and was a member of the Elks.

Harry is survived by his wife Teresa; a son Blake Holton of Ft. Worth, TX; daughters: Shari Schaefer of Carlyle, IL and Morgan "Kassie" Holmes of Newton; a sister and brothers-in-law: Marilyn (Michael) Austin of Scottsdale, AZ and Richard Shaw of Indianola; his five nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be 12 noon until 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 27, 2017, at the Pence – Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with 1:45 p.m., Graveside services at Newton Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the family or a charity of your choosing.
