Newton Daily News October 31, 1944

Mrs. Elizabeth (Cowman) Kane, 91, wife of the late Thomas Kane and a life long resident of the Monroe community, succumbed at her home here early Monday morning after a short illness. Mrs. Kane, whose death was attributed to the infirmities of advanced age, had been in her usual good health until she was confined to her bed a few days ago.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, at the Monroe methodist church, with the Rev. George Pennington, pastor of the church, officiating.

Daughter of the late Joseph and Rebecca Cowman, the decedent was born Feb. 14, 1853, in Putman county, Indiana, and at the age of two came to Iowa with her parents. They located in Marion county, where Elizabeth grew to woman-hood and on March 12, 1869, was united in marriage to Thomas Kane. The couple moved to a farm near Fairmount, northwest of Monroe, where they resided until Mr. Kane's death.

In September, 1918, Mrs. Kane and daughter, Pearl, moved to Monroe, where they continued to make their home.

Mrs. Kane is survived by eight children, Fred, Ross, Burt, Mrs. Rozella Le Grand and Pearl Kane, all of Monroe, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Lyon of Elmore, Minn. and a son Aretas, of Amarillo, Tex.

At the Old Settlers' Reunion held last fall, Mrs. Kane was acclaimed the oldest "settler" attending. She spent the day at the town park, where the affair was held and enjoyed renewing acquaintances with old friends.

She was a long time member of the Monroe Methodist church and an active member as long as her health permitted.
