Dolan N. Cowden
July 7, 1927 ~ January 23, 2017 (age 89)

Dolan Nelson Cowden, 89, of Newton, formerly of Pleasantville, died on January 23, 2017. Per Dolan’s wishes no services have been scheduled and the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the cremation. Memorials to Kid’s Assist or the Pleasantville Booster Club may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family.

Dolan, the son of Tommy Nelson and Willa Lena (Hutchison) Cowden, was born on July 7, 1927 in Bolivar, Missouri. As a child, his family moved to Monroe, Iowa where Dolan graduated from Monroe High School in 1945. After high school, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII from June 21, 1945 to July 26, 1946. Dolan made his home in Swan and Pleasantville for many years and worked as a farmer and a car dealer. He was a 50-year member of the Pleasant Masonic Lodge #128, a member of the American Legion Post #108 and a founding member of the Pleasantville Baptist Church. Dolan loved cars and was the first person to take a lap around the Knoxville Raceway. He also enjoyed mushroom hunting, Pleasantville athletics, and being a part of the “Chain Gang” for Pleasantville football for many years. With his dedication to Pleasantville High School activities he was honored to be chosen one year as the Grand Marshall for the Pleasantville Homecoming Festivities. On August 7, 1997, Dolan was united in marriage with Dixie Wood Russell in Newton, Iowa. They made their home in Pleasantville until moving to Newton in 2002.

Those left to honor Dolan’s memory are his wife, Dixie of Newton; children, Judy Weltz of Grand Fork, Canada, Craig (Shelley) Cowden of Des Moines, Brad (Joni) Cowden of Pleasantville, and Christy Ekman of Pleasantville; step-children, Randa (Ken) Walker of Newton, Kimmi Armstrong of Newton, and Ben (Christine) Russell of Michigan; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren, including “Tiger”, grandpa’s special helper; his sister, Kathy Lillibridge of Marshalltown; a son he loved like his own, Paul (Rose Mary) Krichau; and his many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dolan was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bobby Lee Cowden in 1981; son-in-law, Ron “Bear” Weltz; sister, Marilyn (Bill) Wilson; and a brother-in-law, Jim Lillibridge. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa Mon 23 Jan 2017
