Velma’s funeral service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 14th at the Otley Reformed Church, 700 Johnston St. in Otley.

The family will greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 14th at the church.

Memorials to the Otley Reformed Church or to the Park Centre Good Samaritan Fund may be left at the church on the day of the services or they may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials may also be mailed to the Wallace Family Funeral Home, 1115 E. 19th St. N., Newton, IA 50208; please add, Attn: Brouwer Family on the envelope.

Velma M. Dop Brouwer, the daughter of Charles and Bertha Poortinga Dop, was born on May 14, 1921 in rural Monroe, Iowa. She attended the Pleasant Hill Country School.

On February 26, 1941, Velma was united in marriage with Arnold Brouwer at the Monroe United Methodist Church Parsonage in Monroe. They were blessed with five children, Curtis, Dennis, Rodney, Delmar and Sharon. Velma was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife. She made confession of faith in June of 1941 accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a faithful member of the Otley Reformed Church, Masters Mission Circle and the Banner Bearers Circle. Velma loved being with her family; she also enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and flowers.

Velma died on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Park Centre in Newton, she was 95. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arnold on April 23, 1997; in-laws, Bastian Vander Velden, Allan Brouwer, Henry Brouwer, John Brouwer, Garrett Brouwer, Charlotte LeRette, Joe (Martha) Willemsen and Jeff (Gertrude) Willemsen.

Those left to cherish Velma’s memory are her children, Dr. Curtis W. (Nancy) Brouwer of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Dennis (Lynda) Brouwer of Pleasant Hill, Rodney (Jeanne) Brouwer of San Tan Valley, Arizona, Sharon (Chuck) Etter of Ankeny and Delmar (Lavon) Brouwer of Monroe; thirteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, her brother-in-law, Bill (Lavonne) Brouwer of Melbourne, Florida; sisters-in-law, Henrietta Vander Velden of Newton, Darlene Brouwer of Prairie City, Bertha Brouwer of Pella and Lois Brouwer of Van Buren, Arkansas; many nieces, nephews and friends. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa Sat 7 Jan 2017.
