David James Miller
January 14, 1940 - January 1, 2017 (age 76)

David J. Miller, 76, of Newton died on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service and again after the service with a coffee time on Thursday. Memorials in David’s name may be left at the funeral home.

David, the son of Bert and Viva Mae (Rhoades) Vardo, was born on January 14, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up in Des Moines, lived in Newton for a short time and then moved to Colfax, where he graduated from Colfax High School in 1959. David was united in marriage with Janice Tinnermeier on May 27, 1972 in Des Moines. David worked in the factory at Armstrong Tire and Rubber for 29 years and then at the Maytag Company for 10 years, retiring in 2001. He also owned a garden tilling company and tilled many gardens in the area. David was a member of the Elks Lodge, Hawkeye Classic Thunderbird Club, and the UAW Local 997. He was an avid fisherman and took many trips to Canada to go fishing. He also enjoyed cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and trips to Hawaii. David loved gardening and being out on his land which many called “Miller Park” or “Grandpa David’s Forest”. David also liked to spend time tinkering on antique clocks and classic cars.

Those left to honor David’s memory are his wife, Janice of Newton; children and step-children, Teri Miller (Randy Wingert) of Fort Dodge, Michelle (Kent) Deal of Colfax, Gary (Audra) Doak of Nevada, Missouri, Randy Doak of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Johnna (Alan) Moore of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Andrea Wingert, Elizabeth Dague, Siouxzee Moore, Alex Doak, Olivia Doak, Michael Deal, Nicholas Deal, and Evan Moore; his great-grandchild, Ashton Hanson; and a brother, Lloyd (Janice) Miller of Johnston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clifford Miller and Russell Miller; and two grandsons, Ethan Moore and Joshua Doak. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 1 Jan 2017.
