Gwendolyn “Gwen” LaVonne (Huffaker) Spearing, 84, of Baxter died on Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at Baxter Healthcare Center. A visitation will be held from 3:30-6 p.m., Tuesday, December 27, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials in Gwen’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Gwen, the daughter of Cecil and Maude (Sutton) Huffaker, was born on March 1, 1932 in rural Jasper County, Iowa. Gwen was united in marriage with Paul Robert Spearing, Sr. in Lake Mills, Iowa. Gwen was a lifelong resident of Baxter and in addition to being a homemaker, she worked as a cook in many area restaurants including the Terrace Inn and Mason’s Cafe. Gwen enjoyed reading and crocheting scratchers. She and Paul also liked to travel to steam or gas engine shows.

Gwen is survived by her children, Gloria (Gert) Muller of Creston, Craig Spearing of Kansas City, Kansas, Paul Robert (Karen) Spearing, Jr. of Unionville, Missouri, and Sheryel (Dan) Marx of Newton; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; siblings, Harlan Huffaker of Baxter, Martha Bucklin of Missouri, Don (Shirley) Huffaker of Baxter, Larry (Tesha) Huffaker of Newton, and Caroline Bishop of Creston; and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Spearing, Sr.; son, Gary Spearing; and a sister, Donna Martin. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 21 Dec 2016.
