August 4, 1936 ~ December 3, 2016 (age 80)

Helen’s funeral service with an Eastern Star service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 7th at the First United Methodist Church, 210 N. 2nd Ave. E. in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 6th at the church.

Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or to the Newton Chapter #100 OES (Order of the Eastern Star) may be left at the church at the time of the visitation and service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Ratliff Family on the envelope.

Helen L. (Romans) Ratliff, the daughter of Carl J., Sr. and Edna (Steinman) Malson Romans was born on August 4, 1936 in Newton, Iowa.

On January 25, 1953, Helen was united in marriage with Charles A. “Chuck” Ratliff in Newton. They were blessed with two children, Pam and Steve.

Helen had worked in her mother’s restaurants. She had also worked for Bruce’s Cleaners for 30 years and at the same time Helen had also driven a school bus for the Newton Community School District for 24 years, retiring in 2013.

Helen was an active member of the First United Methodist Church; she worked with the Bible School, she was a coordinator for the Community Meals, co-chair of Lydia Circle and served on the UMW Board. Helen was a member of the Newton Chapter #100 OES (Order of the Eastern Star) where she served as Secretary. She was a volunteer with the Jasper Co. Red Cross and a member of the VFW Post 1655 Auxiliary.

Helen loved being with her family; she really enjoyed her grandsons and great-grandchildren. She had also enjoyed square dancing, traveling and camping.

On Saturday, December 3, 2016, Helen died at the Newton Village Nursing Home surrounded by the love of her family, she was 80.

She was preceded in death by grandparents, Charles and Isadore Steinman and Clyde and Mary Romans; her parents, Carl and Edna Romans, Sr.; husband, Chuck in 2004; brothers, Don Malson, Sam and Carl, Jr. Romans; sisters, Elsie Fae Malson, Beverly Duncan, Hazel Kleinendorst; and nephew, Dennis Glade.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Pam Ratliff of Newton and Steve (Ann) Ratliff of Baxter; grandsons, David Ratliff of Baxter and Andy (Katie) Ratliff of Baxter; her two great-grandchildren, Ben and Riley Ratliff of Baxter; sister, Jane (Tom) Tesar of Tama; three sisters-in-law, Marie Ratliff of Nashville, Tennessee, Dorothy (David) Butler of Unionville, Missouri and Mari (Alton) Denney of Ashland City, Tennessee; and her many nieces and nephews. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 3 Dec 2016.
