===================================
John S. Davis who died yesterday has been a resident of Jasper County for a great many years. He was the fourth of ten children. He was born in Hendricks County, Indiana, Oct. 25, 1841, which would have made his age 64 years this October. With his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Davis, he came to Eddyville, Ia., in 1850 and the next year to Jasper County and settled on a farm just south of the poor farm. The farm is still in the family and is owned by Alec Davis. Of the children all have died except Alec, Mrs. James Lee of Newton, a brother in Louisiana, another in California and a sister in Colorado. Mrs. W. M. Mathews who died in this city last February was also a sister.

Jno. S. Davis passed his early boyhood in Jasper County. He served two years in the War of the Rebellion in the 1st Iowa Cavalry and received his discharge in 1865. In December 1868, he was married to Miss Jennie Squires who, with two daughters, Mrs. T. J. Russell and Mrs. Walter Bishop, survive. A daughter, Irene, died in 1898. After his marriage Mr. Davis bought a farm of 270 acres of rich land one mile east of Murphy where he and his wife have lived ever since, although he practically retired from active labor some twenty years ago.

Mr. Davis was a member of the Christian Church at Kellogg in which he was very active being one of the Elders for many years. He was a member of the G. A. R. and also prominent in the State Grange Association of which he served in an official capacity for several years. In local affairs in Buena Vista Township he has always taken an active interest. He was one of the directors of the Jasper County Fair Association for many years and also a director in the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Newton.

In his family Mr. Davis was a most excellent father and husband. He liked to see his wife and children have what they wanted and being successful in financial matters he was able to easily gratify their desires.

As a man, in the community in which he lived he was held in very high esteem and was looked up to by all who knew him as an exemplary man. His reputation was one worthy of emulation.

On May 19 last, he came up for a short visit with his daughter, Mrs. T. G. Russell in this city, he was taken ill and never recovered. He had always been in excellent health but a complication of affairs was too much for even a man of his rugged constitution.

Jno. S. Davis will be missed by all who knew him – for more reasons than one. ~ The Newton Daily News, Thursday, August 3, 1905, Page 1, Column 5
