Pioneer Dies
Born in Log Cabin
Native of Vandalia Neighborhood; Lived in Newton Past Several Years
John P. Brunner, 84, died at his home, 317 West Eleventh street North, at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, following an illness which had confined him to his bed the past week.
He had been in failing health some time and seriously ill for the past month.
Mr. Brunner was born June 24, 1857, in a log house, two miles east of Vandalia, Ia., the son of Jacob and Anna Margaretta (Michael) Brunner.
The family lived in the log house until Mr. Brunner was 12 years old, when his father built a frame home, now occupied by a nephew, Harry Brunner.
On June 21, 1878, Mr. Brunner was united in marriage to Lena Deere. To this union two children were born, M. S. Brunner, and Margaret (Brunner) Kling.
Mr. Brunner farmed near Prairie City and Galesburg about 16 years and later moved to Griswold, where he operated a feed store until Mrs. Brunner died, Aug. 31, 1906.
On Nov. 12, 1909, he married Cora J. (Haines) Sparks at Oklahoma City, Okla. The couple lived in Sully and Des Moines before coming to Newton in 1917, where they have since resided.
He was a member of the Masonic and Knights of Pythias lodges, of the First Christian church of Newton, and of the Daily News Three Quarter Century club
He was the last of a family of 11 children, having been preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and four sisters.
Surviving relatives are his wife, a son, M. S. Brunner; a daughter, Margaret B. Kling of Newton; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 12 nephews and nieces.
Final rites will be held at the First Christian church in Newton, Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with Dr. E. P. Gabriel officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frazier Thomason of Eldora.
Interment will be in the Woodland cemetery at Lynnville, Ia.

Brunner Rites Held Sunday In Newton
Funeral services for John P. Brunner, 84, who died at his home Thursday, were conducted at the First Christian church Sunday afternoon with Dr. E. P. Gabriel in charge, assisted by the Rev. Frasier Thomason of Eldora, Ia. Interment was in the Woodland cemetery.
Music was provided by Howard McConeghey who sang, “Crossing The Bar,” and “Good Night and Good Morning,” accompanied by Mrs. Lulu Taylor.
Floral pieces were in charge of Mrs. G. T. Holdsworth and Mrs. John Nelson.
Those serving as pall bearers were Adam Brunner, Fred Kling, Lawrence Kling, Lester Kling, Harry Haines, and Everett Richards.
