Bethel – William Thompson, a pioneer of Richland township, son of Alexander and Mary Thompson, was born in Mercer county, Ill., Jan. 17, 1872, and passed away at the community hospital in Grinnell March 7, 1942.
He was the youngest of nine children, eight of whom preceded him in death. One older brother, John, resides near Grinnell.
His parents moved from Illinois to Richland township, Jasper county, Iowa, about 1875, and William made his home with them until their death. Since that time he has lived alone on the same farm, until his failing health compelled him to enter the Community hospital for about three months.
His entire life was spent in the same community and although his business and social activities were confined very closely to his home, he was quite widely known through the country. Besides his brother John he is survived by many nephews and nieces and other relatives.
Funeral services in charge of the Rev. Clarence Woolard, former Bethel pastor were held Thursday afternoon at Bethel church.
A male quartet composed of Cliff and Lehrl Fritz, Wallace Williams and Cleon Russel sang three songs accompanied by Mrs. Lehrl Fritz at the piano.
Pallbearers were Alex and Ernest Lincoln, Louie Thompson, Charles Thompson, John Thompson, jr., and Edward Thompson.
Interment was in the Bethel cemetery.
