John W. Honnold, one of Monroe’s most highly respected citizens, died at his home here Saturday noon, March 4, 1905, aged about 78 years. Mr. Honnold had been ailing for the past year and the last few weeks of life were ones of great suffering but thru all he bore his affliction with Christian courage, and was ready to answer the Master’s call.

Mr. Honnold was married twice. To the first marriage were born ten children and all are living now.

When the war of the rebellion broke out Mr. Honnold enlisted in an Indiana Reg’t and was Lieutenant in one of the companies, and always filled the place with courage.

After leaving the army he taught school in the winter and farmed thru the summer. 21 terms of school are placed on his record as a teacher. His first wife died in 1880 and in 1882 he was again married to Mrs. Lucindy Mercer, a most excellent woman, who survives him and who is deeply stricken in his death.

Mr. Honnold was justice of the peace here for 8 years, also mayor of Monroe, and was Commander of the local order of G. A. R. for several terms. And it was a most pathetic scene when each old comrade with faltering steps took a last look at their old comrade.

The funeral proper took place from the M. E. Church of which he was a devoted member in life. Rev. M. Stahl paid a beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased.

The G. A. R. and the W. R. C. attended in a body and after the services were concluded the G. A. R. took charge of the body and gave it a soldier’s burial. So rest in peace, the flag enfolds your form for which you fought and marched and suffered much. Rest comrade, rest. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Wednesday, March 8, 1905
