A Sad Death
Mrs. Martin Welsh has been in very poor health for years past, and for the last few years her mind has been weakening and she was not entirely responsible for what she did. She and her husband have been making their home with their son-in-law, Mr. A. T. Carey, in south-west Newton. On Sunday, the family, with the exception of Mrs. Welsh, went to Welsh’s restaurant for dinner. Mr. Welsh returned home first and missing his wife went to search for her. Going to the basement, he saw the boards torn up from the covering of the cistern and the body of his wife floating therein. By his own efforts the body was taken from the water but life was extinct. The alarm was quickly given and neighbors and friends done all in their power to dull the sharpness of pain caused by sudden death. She was a faithful wife and mother – noting better can be said.
Anna Carey was born in Ireland, May 12, 1832, came to America when she was eighteen years of age. She was married to Martin Welch in 1855, and came to Jasper county about forty years ago. Eight of her children are living and most of them attended the funeral which was held in the Catholic church yesterday morning.
