Bishop Dies Friday Night
Clarence Bishop Succumbs Following a Stroke Last Wednesday Evening
Clarence A. Bishop, 68 well-known Newton and Jasper county resident, died at his home Friday evening at 7 o’clock following a stroke which he suffered Wednesday evening.
Funeral services will be held at the Morgan Funeral home Monday afternoon at 2:00 with burial in the Newton cemetery.
He was born Jan. 2, 1875, in Jasper county, the son of Hilon J. and Margaret Davis Bishop, both deceased. As a young man, he entered the carpenter trade and married Nannie E. Johnston Dec. 17, 1902. They farmed in Jasper county for five years before Mrs. Bishop died in the fall of 1907.
He began farming in Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1914 and has been farming there since that time, spending winters at his home on First Avenue East in Newton. On Feb. 22, 1915, he married Bertha Welle, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Welle.
He is survived by his wife, three brothers, Charles E., Walter R., and Fred P., and one sister, Mabel Welle, all of Newton.

Rites Are Held Here Monday For Clarence Bishop
Funeral services for Clarence A. Bishop, 68, resident of Saskatchewan, Canada, and Newton who died at his home here Friday evening following a stroke suffered earlier in the week, were conducted from the Morgan Funeral home Monday afternoon, Jan. 25.
The Rev. W. J. Fowler of Sigourney, Ia., officiated at the rites and interment was in the Newton Union cemetery.
Came Here in Fall
Mr. Bishop who owned and operated a wheat ranch in Saskatchewan, Canada, accompanied by Mrs. Bishop, came to Newton last fall to reside at their home at 728 First avenue East while attending to business interests.
Mr. and Mrs. Bishop had planned to leave Newton in the near future to spend the remainder of the winter in Florida when he was stricken at the home. Wednesday, Mr. Bishop only regained consciousness for a few hours after the stroke.
Surviving Relatives
In addition to his wife, the former Bertha Welle, he is survived by three brothers, Charles E., Walter R., and Fred P. Bishop, and one sister, Mabel Welle, all of Newton.
During the services, Mrs. F. E. McClean, accompanied by Mrs. Edgar Sabin, sang “Abide With Me” and “Be Still My Soul”.
Pallbearers
Pallbearers at the services were Charles Davis, N. E. Nelson, Homer Denniston, Harry Vinall, Sherman Woods and J. G. McFadden.
Mrs. Hazel Murphy and Mrs. Rosa DePenning were in charge of the floral pieces.
Mr. Bishop was born Jan. 2, 1875, in Jasper county, the son of H. J. and Margaret Davis Bishop, and had spent the greater part of his life in this county, leaving in 1914 to farm in Canada.
