Mexican Dies of Smallpox; 20 Years Old and Unmarried
Carl Meslenno, Mexican Laborer, In Employ or Rock Island Road, Quarantined Thursday, Died Yesterday Afternoon of Dread Disease
Buried in Potter’s Field in the Still of the Night
Car in Which Victim was Housed has Been Burned and Physicians in Case Say There is no Further Danger From Disease
Carl Meslenno, the Mexican laborer, in the employ of the Rock Island Road, who was stricken with small pox and quarantined last Thursday morning, died yesterday afternoon about four o’clock, a victim of the dread disease, and was buried last night about ten o’clock. When Meslenno was first stricken it was seen he was suffering with small pox of the most malignant type and his recovery was given out as doubtful. There was scarcely a place on his body that was not broken out and he suffered intensely. The dead man was about 20 years of age and was unmarried. He had been in this city less than a week before he was taken sick.
The car in which the man was housed during his illness was burned this morning about three o’clock and every precaution taken to prevent the spread of the disease. Physicians state that there is practically no danger now of the disease being contracted by others as everything was done in a careful manner during the man’s illness.
